Silymarin or milk thistle is a flower herb related to the daisy and ragweed family. It is native to Mediterranean countries.

Traditionally, this herb is use for liver & gall bladder problems. Silymarin is an antioxidant compound taken from milk thistle seeds. It is helpful in liver disorders, hepatitis, cirrhosis, jaundice, gall bladder disorder, etc.

  • Hepatitis A
  • Chronic active hepatitis
  • Toxic metabolic hepatic damage
  • Amanita phalloides poisoning
  • carbon tetrachloride poisoning
  • adjuvant treatment in cirrhosis & alcoholic hepatitis
  • Gall bladder related disorder


This is more important than indication. Because we must know the conditions when not to give this medicine.

  • hepatic encephalopathy
  • obstructive jaundice
  • primary biliary cirrhosis
  • hypersensitivity to silymarin


Hepatic disorder
140 mg twice or thrice in a day

10mg/kg body weight
Below dosage is given as per age, kindly corelate dose with weight if needed

0-2 years – 105mg per day
3-7 years – 210mg per day
8-12 years – 315mg per day
13 or above Р420mg per day 


There is no major side-effect reported of silymarin. If adverse effect occurs, it may be related to your complain of liver diseases like

  • Nausea.
  • Diarrhea.
  • Intestinal gas.
  • Fullness or pain in the stomach.
  • Loss of appetite.
  • Rashes and itching.


Silymarin reduces the turnover of membrane phospholipids and stabilises cell membranes of hepatocyte. It also has potent antioxidant action and prevents lipid peroxidation
