It is used to treat nausea & vomiting in different conditions. It is available in both tablet & injection form.

Ondansetron was patented in 1984 and approved for medical use in 1990. It is one of the essential medicine on World Health Organization’s list. It is available as a generic medication.

INDICATION OF ONDANSETRON

  • Nausea & vomiting associated with cancer, radiation & chemotherapy
  • Postoperative nausea and vomiting
  • Nausea & vomiting due to gastric disturbance or in dehydration
  • Cyclical vomiting syndrome in which vomiting lasts for hours to days in patient. It mostly occurs to those who have migraine or having family history of migraine.

MECHANISM OF ACTION

Ondansetron is a highly specific and selective serotonin 5-HT3 receptor antagonist.

It is thought that ondansetron’s antiemetic action is mediated mostly via antagonism of vagal afferents with a minor contribution from antagonism of central receptors.

DOSAGE

Dosage may be different in disease condition or before chemotherapy or before surgery.

Adult
Generally, 4mg or 8mg twice or three time in day before meal. It given 8mg 30 minutes before giving chemotherapy.

CONTRAINDICATIONS

There is no known contraindication of giving ondansetron medicine to patient.

If patient having hyperaensitivity to this molecule, than we should avoid this medicine in that patient.

ONSET OF EFFECT

It starts effect within few minutes in injection & within 30 minutes after giving oral tablet.

ADVERSE EFFECT

Each & every molecule which have effect, it has also side-effect. We can not deny adverse effect or side-effect. But it is not happen to everybody, it only occurs to someone who have sensitivity to particular molecule.

If patient have known sensitivity to any medicine, than they should show it to your consulting doctor.

If adverse effect occurs than it may be one of below

  • Diarrhoea or constipation
  • Headache
  • Bronchospasm, breathlessness
  • Angioedema
  • Urticaria
  • Blurred vision
  • Warm feeling in the head/stomach

SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS

If patient having liver problem than dose should be cut to ½ or ⅓.

This medicine should be avoid below 4 years of age.
