In this post, I will give you information regarding Kidney stone diet. Definitely this article will helpful to those who have renal stone or those who have repeated complain of stone. Some fruits, Vegetables have content of high oxalate or uric acid that may encourage stone formation.

Between 1% and 15% of people globally are affected by kidney stones at some point in their life. In 2015, 22.1 million cases occurred, resulting in about 16,100 deaths.

TYPES OF KIDNEY STONE

  • Calcium Oxalate

    This is most common stone. Approx 80% cases are of this stone. It means out of 10 patient of stone 8 patient having calcium oxalate stone. Calcium and oxalate in the diet play a part but are not the only factors that affect the formation of calcium oxalate stones. Dietary oxalate is found in many vegetables, fruits, and nuts.

  • Calcium Phosphate

    Tends to grow in alkaline urine especially when proteus bacteria are present.

  • Uric Acid

    Diets rich in animal proteins and purines: substances found naturally in all food but especially in organ meats, fish, and shellfish.

  • Struvite

    Prevention of struvite stones depends on staying infection-free. Diet has not been shown to affect struvite stone formation.

  • Cystine

    Cystine, an amino acid (one of the building blocks of protein), leaks through the kidneys and into the urine to form crystals.

As you learn there are different kind of stones & have different kind of reason.To avoid this we should modify our diet.

VEGETABLES

AVOID THIS VEGETABLES

Some vegetables have high oxalate contents that encourage calcium oxalate stone formation. This is most common type of stone so diet restriction is most important. Firstly, if you have renal stone or repetitive problem than you should avoid or decrease frequency of below vegetables.

  • BRINJAL
  • BEANS
  • LADY FINGER
  • CAPCICUM
  • TOMATO
  • CUCUMBER
  • PALAK

VEGETABLES WHICH PREVENT STONE FORMATION

Some vegetables are the rich sources of stone inhibitors like magnesium, phosphorus & phyto-constituents for urinary system. So,taking in large amount of these vegetables will reduce the chances of stone formation.

  • POTATOES
  • RADISH
  • PUMPKINS

FRUITS 

AVOID THIS FRUITS

Urine should be kept alkaline to prevent stone formation, thus fruits should be liberally used & acid forming foods should be minimised. So,below fruits should not take in large amount to reduce the chance of stone formation.

FRUITS WHICH PREVENT STONE FORMATION

Some fruits contents vitamin C, vitamin B complex, betacarotene present in fruits, breakdown oxalates in the body thereby, preventing stone formation.

CEREALS

AVOID THIS CEREALS

If level of urine oxalate is high,limiting high oxalate foods reduce risk of forming renal stones. So, minimise the use of below cereals.

  • FINE WHEAT FLOUR (MAIDA)
  • OATMEAL
  • BRAN

CEREALS WHICH PREVENT RENAL STONE

Some cereals have rich source of magnesium, potassium act as stone inhibitor. This will help to reduce chance of stone formation.

  • BARLEY
  • CHIDWA ( PUFFED RICE)
  • MOONG DAL
  • HORSE GRAM (EXTRACT)

MISCELLANEOUS

AVOID IN KIDNEY STONE

  • COFFEE
  • CASHEW NUTS
  • CHOCOLATES

HELPFULL IN KIDNEY STONE

Drinks contain phytonutrients to prevent stone formation like dialysable bio-molecules in below fruits.

  • COCONUT WATER
  • LEMONADE
  • ALOEVERA JUICE

HIGH PURINE FOODS

Foods rich in uric acid / purines increase urinary excretion of uric acid which predisposes to both uric acid & oxalate stone. So, we should avoid high purine foods as mentioned below.

KIDNEY STRENGTHENING FOOD

A healthy diet from variety of components provide nutritional supplement to regularize kidney functioning, metabolism & improve body defense system.

You should include these foods to keep your kidney healthy.

  • PAPAYAS
  • GARLIC
  • CRANBERRY JUICE
  • YOGURT

WATER

Drink ten 10 ounce glasses (3 liters, 3.2 quarts, 0.8 gallons) of water per day to decrease the risk of stone formation. If your urine is light and clear, you’re likely drinking enough water.

Minimum 2 litres Urine output required those who have repeated complain of stone & they have to maintain water intake accordingly.

Water must be soft in nature. Hard water of well and bore have high TDS & it increase the chance of stone formation. We must select drinking water wisely. Either rainy water or water from DAM is safe. Using Reverse Osmosis System is protect us from anykind of infection as well decrease hardness of water.
