Itraconazole was patented in 1978 and approved for medical use in the U.S.A. in 1992. It is on of the essential medicine on  World Health Organization’s List.

INDICATION OF ITRACONAZOLE

Any kind of fungal infection inside body or out side body, this medicine is indicated.

  • Ring worm on any part of skin

  • Vulvovaginal candidiasis – fungal infection of vagina
  • Pityriasis Versicolor – fungal infection over skin
  • Onychomycosis – fungal infection of nail

MECHANISM OF ACTION

It is fungistatic medicine, it means it inhibit the growth of fungus. After taking this medicine, fungus growth inhibited & this way it helps to cure the fungal infection.

DOSAGE OF ITRACONAZOLE

Dosage of itraconazole is different from disease to disease.

Ring worm
100mg twice daily for 15 days or for long duration as per complain of patient. Dosage may be increase if patient having resistance to treatment.

Fungal infection of nail (Onychomycosis)
200mg twice daily for 7 days
Repeat same dose after 21 days

This medicine should not to patient who have liver disease.

ADVERSE EFFECT

Each & every molecule which have effect, it has also side-effect. We can not deny adverse effect or side-effect. But it is not happen to everybody, it only occurs to someone who have sensitivity to particular molecule.

If patient have known sensitivity to any medicine, than they should show it to your consulting doctor.

If adverse effect occurs than it may be one of below

  • Gastric disturbance like nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain
  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Increase liver enzyme
  • Jaundice
  • Allergic reaction
  • Peripheral neuropathy

SPECIAL PRECAUTION 

This medicine should not give in pregnancy. There may be chances of spontaneous abortion or fetal anomalies. We have limited study towards this & we need more detail study for using itraconazole during pregnancy.

Use with caution in lactation, only if clearly indicated.

It should not use in liver or kidney disease.
