Hepatitis : Causes, Symptoms, Diagnosis, Treatment

Today I will give you information about hepatitis.

Hepat = Liver
Itis.     = Inflammation

It means that hepatitis is the inflammation of liver. I will give you information in such a way that you can understand easily.

It is simple inflammation of liver but if untreated then it may cause liver damage so this topic is very important. Hepatitis is acute if it resolve within six months, and chronic if it lasts more than six months. Acute mostly resolve on its own, sometimes it progress to chronic hepatitis or acute live failure. Chronic heaptitis may progress to cirrhosis of liver, liver failure, liver cancer.

Worldwide in 2015, Hepatitis A occured to approx 114 million people, chronic hepatitis B affected to allmost 343 million people and chronic hepatitis C about 142 million people. Due to this disease more than 1 million deaths in a year, most of which occur indirectly from liver scarring or liver cancer.

We learn here what are the

  1. Viral infection like HAV,HBV,HCV,HDV,HEV.
    Viral infection is most common cause of hepatitis.
  2. Bacterial infection
  3. Excess consumption of alcohol
    Due to excessive alcohol taking for years, patient may suffer from hepatitis. If men takes 80 grams and female takes 40 grams of alcohol per day for long term is associated with alcoholic hepatitis.
  4. Due to drug and poisoning
    Many medicines,industrial toxins and herbal and dietary supplement can cause hepatitis. Medicines like analgesic paracetamol; antibiotics such as amoxycillin- clavunate, erythromycin, trimethoprim-sulphamethaxazole; anticonvulsants like valporate and phynytoin; some steroids, cholesterol-lowering medicines and HIV medicines may casuse liver damage.
  5. Accumulation of copper in liver called Wilson disease
  6. Circulatory insufficiency
  7. From infected mother to newborn

In hepatitis some patient have symptoms and some patient don’t have any symptoms. It has broad spectrum of presentation that ranges from a complete lack of symptoms to severe liver damage. If symptoms appear, that are as below

  2. Nausea vomiting
  3. Abdominal pain
  4. Fever
  5. Headache,bodyache
  6. Jaundice
  7. Dark coloured urine and pale stool
  8. Paleness of skin

Once it becomes chronic then there is chances of liver damage which may cause cirrhosis of liver and liver cancer. So, early diagnosis and treatment is necessary in this disease.

It’s simply done by urine & blood tests.

  • Urine report : bile salt and bile pigment in urine
  • Serum bilirubin level increase
  • SGPT & SGOT level increase
  • USG
  • CT scan, MRI
  • Liver biopsy is gold standard test for diagnosis. However, liver biopsy is typically not advised in initial diagnosis test because it is invasive and it is associated with a small but significant risk of bleeding that is increased in people with liver injury and cirrhosis.

  1. Firstly, patient needs completely bed rest
