In this blog, we learn about functions of Kidney. It is very important and interesting topic. Kidney regulate blood pressure, blood calcium level, excrete waste product by urine & much more. We can not think our life without kidney.

We have one pair of kidney (left kidney & right kidney)

FUNCTIONS OF KIDNEY

1HOMEOSTATIS

(a) EXCRETE WASTE PRODUCT

Kidney excrete the unwanted waste products, which are formed during metabolic activity.

  • Urea
  • Uric acid
  • Creatinine
  • Bilirubin
  • Products of metabolism of other substance

(b) MAINTANANCE OF WATER BALANCE

Kidney maintain the water balance in body by conserving water when decreased in body & excreting water through urine when it is excess in body.

Everyone feels that when we drink more water, at that time we are more urinating. This is actually water balance by kidney.

(c) MAINTENANCE OF ELECTROLYTE BALANCE

Maintenance of electrolyte balance, especially sodium in relation to water balance.

Kidney retain sodium if the osmolarity of body water decreases & eliminate sodium when osmolarity increases.

(4) MAINTAINANCE OF ACID-BASE BALANCE

The pH of the blood and body fluids should be maintained within narrow range for healthy living. Kidney helps in maintaining acid base balance.

Our body continuously produce acid like gastric juice or pancreatic juice, etc. What happen if only this acid added continuously. We can not live, acidosis develop due to more acid.

Acidosis type of situation prevented by kidney, lungs & blood buffers. Out of that, kidney plays major role in eliminating acids like sulphuric acid and phosphoric acid.

2HEMOPOIETIC FUNCTION

Kidney stimulate the production of Red blood cell (RBC) by secreting erythropoietin. Erythropoietin is the important stimulating factor for making red blood cell.

Kidney also secrete thrombopoietin, which stimulates the production of platelet.

3ENDOCRINE FUNCTION

Kidney secretes many hormonal substance. Which are as below

  • Erythropoietin
  • Thrombopoietin
  • Renin
  • 1,25- dihydroxycholecalciferol
  • Prostaglandins

4REGULATION OF BLOOD PRESSURE

Kidney plays important role in maintaining blood pressure by two ways

  • By regulating volume of extracellular fluid
  • Through renin-angiotensin mechanism

5REGULATION OF BLOOD CALCIUM LEVEL

How you feel, If I say that you will not get calcium from any food you take?

If kidney not work & not produce vitamin D, than above sentence is true. We not get calcium if kidney is not working.

Kidney converts 1,25-dihydroxycholecalciferol into vitamin D & Vit D is necessary for absorption of calcium.

This way regulation of calcium is maintain by kidney.
