Cefuroxime : Indication, Dosage, Side-effects

There are many antibiotics available in market, which are devide under group. Cefuroxime is 2nd generation cephalosporin group of medicine. It is available in tablet and injection form.

Cefuroxime patented in 1971 & approved for medical use in 1977. It is on the World Health Organisation list’s of essential medicine.

It is active against many bacteria including staphylococcus and streptococcus, as well as a range of gram negative bacteria.

  • Bacterial meningitis caused by H.influenzae, meningococcal
  • Urinary tract infection
  • Skin and soft tissue infections
  • Gonococcal urethritis
  • Bacterial infections of urethra
  • Pneumonia
  • Otitis media
  • Sepsis
    Bacterial infections in blood
  • Surgical prophylaxis
    It is given before operation to prevent future bacterial infection after procedure.



It kills bacteria by bactericidal activity, it interfering with bacterial cell wall synthesis and inhibiting cross-linking of the peptidoglycan.

Cefuroxime are also thought to play a role in the activation of bacterical cell autolysins. Due to that bacterial cell damage and kill the bacteria.

This medicine act against

  • S.pneumoniae
  • H.influenzae
  • Neisseriae
  • E.coli
  • Klebseilla
  • Proteus mirabilis



After choosing particular medicine for particular disease, next challenge is to give required dose. For cefuroxime dosage given by considering patient’s weight and disease severity. 

Approx dosage – 20 to 30 mg/kg body weight

Adult dosage
250 to 500mg tablet twice daily

Children dosage
125 to 250mg twice daily as per body weight

Onset of effect
Within 30 minutes to 1 hour



Cefuroxime is generally well tolerated and its side-effects are usually transient. We can not deny adverse or side-effect, but it occurs to only them who have sensitivity to particular molecule.

If anyone have past history of reaction to any medicine than it must be documented. They should show allergy note to doctor everytime while consulting.

Below mention side-effect may occur who have sensitivity to this molecule

  • Nausea, vomiting, diaarhoea
  • Headache, dizziness
  • Skin rashes
  • Drug fever
  • Slight increase in hepatic enzymes

If taken after meal, this medicine is both better absorbed and less likely to cause its most common side effect like nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, headache, dizziness, etc.



Use cautionly in patient who have 

  • kidney or liver disease
  • Pseudo-membranous colitis
  • Hypersensitivity to penicillin
  • Use only if clearly indicated in pregnancy
