Cefpodoxime antibiotic : Indication, Dosage, Side-effects

INDICATION OF CEFPODOXIME

Cefpodoxime is used on both gram +ve & gram -ve bacteria. It act as a bactericidal & also not allow bacterial wall synthesis so bacteria can not grow after taking this medicine. It used in below conditions.

1. Respiratory tract infection (RTI)
   It is used on both Upper & lower respiratory infections like tonsillitis, pharyngitis,pneumonia,sinusitis, etc
2. Urinary tract infections (UTI)
3. Ear – Acute otitis media
4. Gonorrhoea – sexual transmitted disease
5. Skin & soft tissue infection

MECHANISM OF ACTION

Cefpodoxime proxetil is a prodrug of active metabolite cefpodoxime. It is bactericidal and inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis. It inhibits transpeptidase enzyme.

Cefpodoxime has activity against community acquired upper and lowe respiratory tract pathogens like streptococcus pneumococci, H.influenzae and M.catarrhalis.

DOSAGE OF CEFPODOXIME

Once you choose the proper medicine than next important point is to give in proper dosage.

Approximately 10mg/kg/day in two divided dose it is given.

For eg.

This way dosage is calculate. If weight is more than 40KG than also dosage will be same as above mention.

SIDE-EFFECT

Each & every molecule which have effect, it has also side-effect. We can not deny adverse effect or side-effect. But it is not happen to everybody, it only occurs to someone who have sensitivity to particular molecule.

It is patient’s responsibility that they should bring sensitivity report with them if any, while consulting doctor.

If adverse effect occur, that may like as below.

• Nausea, vomiting
• Diarrhoea
• Abdominal pain
• Headache
• Rarely hypersensitivity reaction
• Thrombocytopenia, leucopenia or eosinophilia

SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS

• Use cautionly in patients with a history of hypersensitivity to penicillins,cephalosporin and other beta-lactam antibiotics. If patient have allergy to other cephalosporin group of antibiotic than use this medicine cautionly.
• If patient is suffering from pseudomembranous colitis than patient may suffering from diarrhoea after giving this medicine.
• Give this medicine to lactating or pregnant women if it clearly indicated.
