Amlodipine :Indication,Dosage,Side-effect

In this blog, we learn about amlodipine medicine which is use to treat high blood pressure. It work by blocking calacium channel and available in market under brand names like udp, norvasac, amlokind, amlodep, etc.

amlodipine medicine

Amlodipine medicine was patented in 1982, and approved for medical use in 1990. It is on the World Health Organization’s list of essential medicine.

Calcium channel blocker medicines are as below

  • Amlodipine
  • Nifedipine
  • Felodipine
  • Varapamil

We learn amlodipine medicine in below format

  1. High blood pressure
Our normal blood pressure is about 120/80mmHg. When it reach to 140/90mmHg or above, it consider as high blood pressure.
  2. Angina
Angina means patient having chest pain.
If patient having coronary artery disease and suffering from chest pain while physical stress or emotional stress, than this medicine is useful.

Calcium channel blocker, including amlodipine, may give better protection against stroke than other class of blood pressure lowering medicine. So, amlodipine or other calcium channel blocker medicine are first choice to treat hypertension.

We learn the mechanism of action of amlodipine medicine in animation. So, it will be easier to understand.

Image A is our normal blood vessel, which have calcium channel along the lining. So, calcium ion gets into the vessel which causes narrowing of the vessel (image b). This is normal functioning of our body. Due to narrowing of vessel, our blood pressure rises.

When we take calcium channel blocker medicine like amlodipine, it causes blockage of calcium channel as shown (image C) . Due to that, there is restriction entry of calcium ion into blood vessel. Which causes dilatation of blood vessel.

Simply, wider path always decrease the existing pressure (image D). This way it reduces the high blood pressure.

Other effect of amlodipine medicine is on heart muscles. Amlodipine is calcium channel blocker and it inhibits the movement of calcium ions into cardiac muscle cells. Which reduces the heart contraction. So, there is slightly less time heart beats, which lower the blood pressure and heart rate.

5mg once in a day, if needed we can give upto 10mg per day.

Onset of effect
Within 2-6 hours

Duration of action
Effect of medicine will last for 2-4 days

  1. The only absolute contraindication of amlodipine is allergic reaction to amlodipine or other dihydropyridines.
  2. Cardiogenic shock
In this situation, ventricles are not able to pump enough blood. So, calcium ion is needed for proper pumping of heart. When we give, calcium channel blocker, it blocks calcium ion to heart. This will reduce the pumping of heart. So, in cardiogenic shock, this medicine is not advised.
  3. Safety in pregnancy is has not established.

Each and every medicine, which have effect, also have side-effect. But, it only occurs to those who have sensitivity towards that molecule. If adverse effect occurs, that may be as below

  • Headache, dizziness
