Amikacin : Indication, Dosage, Side-effect


In this article, I will give you information regarding Amikacin antibiotic. It is used to treat many bacterial infections.

Antibiotic means medicine which inhibit growth or destroy bacteria. There are many antibiotics available today in market, it is differenciate under groups. Aminoglycoside group contains medicines like gentamicin, amikacin, kanamycin, clindamycin, etc.

Amikacin antibiotic comes under aminoglycoside group. It is available in injection form, whicj is given either in a vein or muscle. Oral tablet is not available for this antibiotic. Amikacin was patented in 1971 and came into commercial use in 1976. As per W.H.O. Amikacin is essential antibiotic.

This is most important part. Because once you choose medicine you have to also select proper dosage as per weight of patient.

Dosage  : approx 15mg/ KG/ day in divided doses.


10kg child – 150mg/day

20kg child – 300mg/day

40kg or more – 500mg/day

Each & every molecule which have effect, it has also side-effect.We can not deny adverse effect or side-effect.But it is not happen to everybody, it only occurs to someone who have sensitivity to particular molecule.

It is patient’s responsibility that they should bring sensitivity report with them if any, while consulting doctor.

If adverse effect occur, that may like as below.

  2. Headache
  3. Allergy – rashes,itching

  4. Ototoxicity
    hearing loss may occur in aminoglycoside group of antibiotic. It may occurs to those who take higher doses & repeated doses of aminoglycoside.
  5. Nephrotoxicity
    Amikacin may cause damage to kidney, if given in higher dose or for longer than recommended. It must be avoid in patients, who have kidney problem.
  6. Avoid in pregnancy
    If given to pregnant lady, it may cause congenital deafness to child. So, it must be avoid in pregnancy. Go To List

It is FDA approved medicine for using in dogs and in intrauterine infection in horses. Amikacin is one of the most common medicine used in veterinary.

Amikacin antibiotic is useful to treat many bacterial infections in dogs, cats, guinea pigs, rats, mice, prairie, birds, snakes, turtles and tortoise, crocodilians, bullfrogs, and fish. It is not indicated for rabbits and hares ( though it has still been used) because it harms the balance of intestinal microflora.

In dogs and cats, this medicine is used as a topical antibiotic for ear infections and for corneal ulcers, especially those that are caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Ear must be clean before administering the medicine, because pus and cellular debris decrease the effect of amikacin.

Amikacin is administered to the eye when prepared as eye drop or solution.

Side effects in animals is similar to human as mention above.
